The Flu Can Be Very Serious for People 65+

In 2018, adults 65+ accounted for about 17% of Canada’s population. Yet, during the 2013-2018 flu seasons, adults 65+ accounted for up to 70% of influenza-related hospitalizations and up to 91% of influenza-related deaths according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. Adults 65 years of age and older are particularly vulnerable to influenza. That’s why it is important to help protect yourself.

74% of Canadians 65+ reported having at least ONE
chronic condition*, many of which may put them at high risk for
influenza and its complications.

*Arthritis, asthma, cancer, chronic pain, depression, diabetes, emphysema/COPD,
heart disease, high blood pressure, a mood disorder other than depression and stroke.

Canadas National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends influenza immunization for high-risk individuals, such as adults 65+ and people with chronic diseases.

For persons aged 65 years and over, the risk for influenza-attributed death was:

greater among those with chronic heart disease
greater among those with chronic lung disease
greater among those with BOTH chronic heart and lung conditions

A higher dose specifically formulated for adults 65+

As you age, your immune system weakens. Which means your antibody response to vaccines isn’t as high as it used to be. FLUZONE® High-Dose Quadrivalent vaccine is made for people 65+.
The FLUZONE®High-Dose Quadrivalent vaccine provides 4x the amount of antigens (killed virus particles) for each influenza strain contained in the vaccine compared to standard-dose influenza vaccines. The higher dose is intended to give people 65 years and older a better immune response and, therefore, better protection against the flu.

Now available as part of public influenza programs in Ontario, Alberta, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
